In Detention, Sam Bankman-Fried Seeks Depression, ADHD Treatment

Reading Time: 2 minutes

TL: DR Breakdown

  • Legal crisis deepens as SBF’s medication request amplifies trial drama.
  • Witness tampering shadows cryptocurrency founder’s fate.
  • Detention conditions spotlighted amid cryptocurrency legal saga.

On Monday, lawyers representing Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the founder of the now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, made an urgent request. The lawyers sought US District Judge Lewis Kaplan’s intervention to ensure their client received essential medication. Specifically, they’ve highlighted the need for a daily Emsam skin patch for depression and three to four doses of Adderall for ADHD.

The request isn’t merely about comfort but a medical necessity. Hence, the situation at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn becomes more critical. Moreover, SBF is currently held in the MDC, often embroiled in controversies for its less-than-ideal conditions.

Witness tampering and bail revocation

The former CEO’s recent misadventures have kept him in the headlines. Significantly, a judge revoked his bail last Friday following compelling evidence of witness tampering. Federal prosecutors claim that Bankman-Fried leaked private correspondence of Caroline Ellison. Ellison, the previous CEO of Alameda Research and Bankman-Fried’s ex-partner, is now a government cooperator.

Judge Kaplan, in his order on Friday, expressed deep concerns. He mentioned, “There is no condition or combination of conditions of release that will assure that the defendant will not pose a danger to other persons or the safety of the community.” Consequently, the order led to Bankman-Fried’s transfer into US Marshals’ custody and subsequently to the MDC.

MDC’s infamous reputation

Bankman-Fried’s lawyers had initially hoped for a more lenient setting. They suggested an upstate New York minimum-security facility. However, SBF now finds himself in the heart of Brooklyn, at the MDC, a place notoriously known for its challenging conditions. In 2019, legal challenges mounted against the MDC, with New York City public defenders labelling it ‘inhumane.’

The MDC’s legacy doesn’t stop there as Ghislaine Maxwell was once an inmate associated with the Jeffrey Epstein case. Maxwell’s lawyers, during her tenure, raised numerous concerns about the jail’s conditions.

As Bankman-Fried braces for his upcoming fraud trial, his current situation highlights broader issues. The conditions of MDC and the treatment of high-profile inmates are now under sharper scrutiny. Besides, with legal proceedings pending, one can only wonder how this chapter in the cryptocurrency saga will unfold.
